Facelift Myths: Debunked!

Doctor surgeon hand in glove draw wrinkle lines on Woman faceA facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure that helps patients who wish to revitalize and rejuvenate their facial appearance. Facial surgery can remove excess skin and fatty tissue to tighten the muscles around the face for a youthful and more attractive look.

While many patients seek a facelift to attend to their desired needs, others may decide against this procedure due to the countless misconceptions surrounding the surgery. It is important to familiarize yourself with any procedure before deciding to endure it; however, you may come across a few myths regarding facelifts that are simply not true.

Facelifts Are Just for Women

First things first, facelifts are not limited to female patients. While it is traditionally more common for women to undergo cosmetic surgery, men also seek options to benefit their physical needs, which leads them to plastic surgery. Facelifts are among one of the most popular procedures in America for both male and female patients who suffer from sagging jowls or hollowed cheeks.

There Is an Age Requirement

Everyone’s face ages differently depending on genetics and environmental factors. Older patients who wish to undergo facial surgery may feel they are too old for the procedure, and younger patients may think the opposite. While there is no ideal age for when you should undergo a facelift, it is always best to consult with your doctor to determine what he recommends is best for you.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Is the Same Thing

While BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectable treatments offer facial rejuvenation without the need for surgery, they do not provide the same results as a facelift procedure. BOTOX® Cosmetic is used for treating wrinkles, facial lines, and crow’s feet. However, these injectables do not address loose or sagging skin or signs of facial aging in the middle and lower regions of the face like facelift surgery can.

Facelifts Are Permanent

Aging is a part of life. Although facelift surgery may efficiently take years off of your appearance and have long-lasting results, it cannot stop you from aging altogether. To help maintain a healthy and natural-looking appearance, even after your procedure, it is recommended that you moisturize regularly, apply sunscreen daily, and avoid things that can cause damage to your face.

Feel Like Yourself Again With a Mommy Makeover

Womans abdomen divergence of the muscles of the abdomen after pregnancyHaving a child is one of life’s greatest blessings. The transformation that a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy and childbirth to welcome a child into the world is nothing short of a miracle. However, after giving birth, many women recognize the toll that creating a child has taken on their body. A growing abdomen to accommodate a baby and enlarged breasts to produce milk often leave these areas of the body with stretch marks and sagging skin. Additionally, other areas of the body may be left with fatty deposits that were not there before childbirth. When the body has healed after giving birth, many women seek different avenues to get their body back to the way it was. And when diet and exercise just aren’t enough, women often seek additional help from cosmetic surgery.

Giving the Ladies a New Look

Female hormones during pregnancy cause the breasts to enlarge, and after birth, the breasts become engorged with milk to feed a baby. After pregnancy is over and breastfeeding has stopped, the breasts can appear to sag, have loose skin, and be asymmetrical. While strengthening the pectoral muscles with various exercises can assist in lifting the breasts naturally, exercise alone will not correct the shape or enhance the overall size of the breasts.

A breast augmentation performed by a plastic surgeon can correct asymmetry, increase or decrease the size, and lift the breasts back into a preferable position on the chest. To increase the size of the breasts, implants or fat transfer via liposuction of the abdomen or thighs is commonly used. While there are different techniques for performing a breast augmentation procedure, a consultation with a surgeon will determine what is best for each individual’s needs. Most often, surgeons will perform both an augmentation and a lift to obtain desired results. Most patients can return to work in about one week but should abstain from strenuous activities for approximately six weeks.

Flattening the Abdominals

During pregnancy, a woman’s abdominal muscles separate, and the skin stretches in order to accommodate a growing baby. As the body recovers from childbirth, the muscles do not always come back together properly, and the skin may become lax. This gap in the abdominal muscles is called diastasis recti and usually requires surgery to repair. If not repaired, the abdominal area will appear to protrude, or the woman will continue to look pregnant. A tummy tuck procedure will tighten the muscles and remove excess sagging skin. Recovery downtime for a tummy tuck is two weeks, with activities as tolerated from two to six weeks and no strenuous activities for up to six months.

Getting Rid of Excess Fat

Liposuction can be a great way to eliminate excess stubborn fat. This procedure can be performed in conjunction with other procedures and on a variety of areas on the body. Areas commonly treated with liposuction are the abdomen, thighs, back, and arms. Under normal circumstances, liposuction is relatively quick, with patients returning to normal activities in two weeks.

The Benefits of Combining Procedures

  • Anesthesia only administered one time
  • One surgery appointment
  • One recovery period
  • Save money
  • Total body transformation

The Practical Side of Rhinoplasty

nose with surgery line with nose surgeryRhinoplasty, commonly known as nose surgery, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures for both women and men. The procedure is performed to change the size and shape of the nose. For some people, rhinoplasty isn’t performed for aesthetic reasons. Rhinoplasty might be medically necessary for repairing the nose so it can look and function properly.

Damage From Injury

Despite how hard we try to stay free from injury, accidents happen. You trip and fall on your face, get hit with a baseball or an airbag, or maybe even get into a fist fight that doesn’t end in your favor. Things happen, and luckily rhinoplasty can fix and even improve the function and appearance of the nose.

Difficulty Breathing

Difficulty breathing is usually a symptom of a deviated septum. The nasal septum, which is the thin wall between the nasal passages, becomes displaced that causes a partial or complete blockage of airflow from one nostril. This issue can be present at birth or caused by an injury. Septoplasty is a procedure designed to straighten the septum and allow for better airflow. Since a person is already under anesthesia for this procedure, many people will take advantage and have cosmetic work performed on their nose at the same time.

Sinus Problems

A deviated septum can also cause severe sinus issues. A common symptom of a deviated septum is nasal congestion, and one side of the nose is always more congested than the other. This leads to recurrent and repeated sinus infections, which then causes headaches, facial pain, and post-nasal drip. Medication can offer some relief, but it is not a permanent solution. Surgery to repair the septum is the only solution to permanently relieve these symptoms.

Birth Defects

Congenital nasal deformities can cause symptomatic nasal airway obstruction and a decreased self-esteem in children and adults. A deformed nasal structure is related to some of the medical issues discussed above and often brings unwanted attention to the nose instead of the face as a whole.

Being that it is one of the most prominent facial features, the nose is supposed to complement the face, not take away from the other characteristics. Rhinoplasty is a relatively easy procedure that can significantly enhance a person’s quality of life.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

male nudeWhile women desire full and noticeable breasts, the same cannot be said for men. Although it isn’t widely discussed, enlarged male breasts are more common than you might suspect, affecting men of all ages. For men, having enlarged breasts can bring both emotional and physical anguish. Many men find that having gynecomastia (the condition of enlarged male breasts) dampens their confidence in social or intimate situations, even causing them to refrain from participating in the activities they enjoy. Additionally, many men find that excess fat, tissue, and skin in their chest makes exercise physically painful. Even though much of the chest’s volume is made up of fatty tissue, exercise and diet typically do not have any effect on gynecomastia. The one sure way to get rid of this condition, however, is through gynecomastia surgery.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be present in men for several reasons. One common reason is a hormonal imbalance in which estrogen levels are increased in comparison to androgen (male hormone) levels. For this reason, gynecomastia often develops during puberty and may or may not resolve itself over time. Other causes of gynecomastia include weight gain, a loss of skin elasticity, and the use of anabolic steroids or other medications that create an imbalance in estrogen levels.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

During gynecomastia surgery, surgical techniques are tailored to each patient depending on the amount of excess fat, tissue, and skin needed to be removed. If the primary concern with your gynecomastia is excess fatty tissue, then liposuction alone may be enough to rid you of the condition. In this procedure, a cannula (a thin tube), is inserted under the breasts, and the fatty tissue is removed. While the majority of gynecomastia surgeries involve liposuction, there are some cases where liposuction alone is not enough and incisions to excise excess skin and glandular tissue are required. If this is the case, an incision will be made around the areola to remove the excess skin and tissue to flatten the chest.

What Is the Recovery Like?

While all surgeries come with a recovery period, gynecomastia surgery is relatively minor. After your procedure, you will be wrapped in a compression garment to reduce swelling and promote the healing process. You will be given instructions on how long you need to wear this bandage. Patients can typically return to work after one week, depending on the nature of your specific procedure, and you can resume your daily activities soon after. Gynecomastia surgery offers long-lasting results that flattens, contours, and creates a more masculine physique.

Recovering From Labiaplasty

Rear view of a woman relaxing sitting on a couch with the hands on the head and looking outdoorsWith any cosmetic procedure, it is important to follow all of your doctor’s recommendations to ensure a speedy and comfortable recovery. Labiaplasty is no different. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that decreases the size while improving the function of a woman’s labia, which may have stretched due to age, heredity, and childbirth. While the recovery period of any procedure is never ideal, keeping the following in mind will allow for the best recovery possible.

Prepare a Comfortable Recovery Space

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure; however, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first night of your recovery. In order to ensure a smooth transition, it is helpful to have a comfortable space prepared with a lot of pillows and easy access to everything you may need.

Refrain From Sexual Activity

Due to the invasiveness of the procedure, it is necessary that you abstain from intercourse for one to two months to allow your body to fully heal. You should also refrain from wearing tampons during this time.

Limit Physical Activity

While you can often return to work after one week (physically demanding jobs may require longer), it is important that you refrain from heavy physical activity for at least three weeks. It is, however, recommended that you stand and take easy, non-strenuous walks around your house or neighborhood as this increases blood flow and promotes healing.

Stop Smoking

This is important to remember both before and after your surgery. Smoking increases the possibility of complications during your surgery and hinders your recovery afterward as it decreases blood flow and weakens the immune system.

Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing

After your procedure, you will be required to wear a compression undergarment to control swelling and increase blood flow. Afterward, form-fitting clothing, such as yoga pants or skinny jeans, should be avoided to increase comfort and healing.

Remember to Relax

You decided to undergo labiaplasty for yourself. So take this recovery time for yourself as well. Relaxing in a stress-free environment is one of the best recommendations for a speedy recovery. Listen to your body, don’t push yourself before you’re ready, and remember that it is okay to relax and heal.

During your consultation, Dr. Alexander will provide you with a detailed explanation of what you can expect during your recovery.

Facial Rejuvenation: Which Procedure Is Right for Me?

woman thinkingContinuous facial movements, aging, and environmental factors can give you an aged and upset appearance. There are several options for facial rejuvenation; the one(s) for you will depend on your unique goals and preferences. Whether you wish to correct unwanted wrinkles or sagging, Dr. Tim Alexander offers procedures that target a variety of facial concerns.

Facelift surgery is often considered the tried-and-true approach to facial rejuvenation. It involves excising excess skin and fatty tissue from the face and tightening facial muscles to create a smoother, younger aesthetic. A facelift can address any of the following imperfections in the lower face:

  • Displaced facial volume
  • Jowls
  • Double chin
  • Deep nasolabial folds

A mid-facelift corrects minor defects of the mid-face rather than producing facial rejuvenation in the entire face. Dr. Alexander creates incisions in the hairline that extend around the ear where excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is tightened. Mid-facelift surgery addresses issues in the mid-face area, including:

  • Wrinkled lower eyelids
  • Creases around the nose and mouth
  • Sagging skin in the cheeks

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that enhances the upper and lower eyelids. It involves removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids, producing a brighter appearance. Blepharoplasty is designed to treat the following:

  • Sagging of the upper eyelids
  • Fat deposits in the lower eyelids
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Obstructed vision due to hanging upper eyelid skin

Brow Lift

Brow lift surgery reverses signs of aging in the forehead and brow area. Dr. Alexander adjusts the tissue on the forehead to create a youthful and rejuvenated upper face. Ideal candidates for a brow lift can relate to any of the following issues:

  • Drooping eyebrows
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Furrows between the brows

Of course, the best way to know which procedure or procedures will fulfill your goals is to schedule a private consultation with Dr. Alexander. During your meeting, Dr. Alexander will evaluate your condition and formulate a surgical plan that best suits your anatomy and personal preferences.

Lift Your Body Into Better Shape

body lift model imageTargeting excess fat in our bodies is one of the most frustrating tasks to accomplish. The battle of the bulges can sometimes become a never-ending process. Many people will try to diet, exercise, and take supplements to get rid of stubborn fatty tissue. However, some individuals may fail to meet their body goals even with rigorous efforts. Plastic surgery options such as liposuction may allow someone to get rid of excess fat through surgical means, but it does not remove excess skin. Most people who lose an excessive amount of weight will be left with sagging, unflattering skin that is unresponsive to traditional weight loss and exercise methods. Body contouring procedures are ideal options for removing excess fat while correcting hanging, loose skin in problem areas. It is time to lift your body into better shape with body lift surgery!

What Can I Target With Body Lift Surgery?

Body lift surgery is an excellent way for someone to get rid of skin, fat, and tissue that might cause the appearance of undefined curves. It is commonly performed on patients who have lost significant amounts of weight in a short period. Individuals interested in one or a combination of body lift procedures should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and are willing to follow all operational instructions correctly. They should schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to help them determine if they are ready for body lift surgery. Here are some of your body contouring options:

  • Back lift or extended tummy tuck (beltectomy): Weak abdominal muscles and loose skin in the abdomen are common after massive weight loss. Many people think about undergoing tummy tuck surgery; however, when troublesome fat and skin are an issue all around the body, an extended tummy tuck can be performed. An incision is made on the lower back just above to buttocks to remove large amounts of fat in the lower torso and hips.
  • Thigh lift: Excess skin and fat in the upper legs can be unflattering beneath clothing or unveiled. Thigh lift surgery can be performed to address the tone and texture of the thighs creating a smoother, better-contoured appearance. Depending on the amount of correction needed, different lengths and shapes of incisions can be used. Through the incision, excessive skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is tightened.
  • Arm lift: Flabby arms caused by loose, hanging skin are often hard to tone even with a regular diet and exercise regimen. Arm lift surgery can be performed to improve the size and shape of the arms. An incision is made along the underarm, excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is used to reshape the arms to create better tone and definition.

Is My Teen Ready for Transgender Surgery?

Group of friends sitting and laughingSomeone who suffers from gender dysphoria has a different gender identity than the sex and gender assigned to them at birth. The teenage years are already difficult for many adolescents, and those with gender dysphoria may experience teasing or bullying from their peers and struggle to be comfortable with who they are. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics, teenagers made up 2 percent of the patients who underwent cosmetic surgeries last year. There are several gender confirming procedures available that can be utilized to help patients transition from male to female (MTF) or female to male (FTM). However, is transgender surgery appropriate for your teenager?

Help Your Teen Reflect Their Gender Identity

As a parent, it can be hard to see your child struggling with their identity, especially when they are suffering from gender dysphoria. They can change their clothing, but the way their body appears can only be changed through surgery. Plastic surgery is a safe and effective option for addressing unwanted characteristics on the face or body. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help determine if your child is ready to undergo transgender surgery:

Are They Realistic in Their Expectations?

Transgender surgery may involve a combination of procedures designed to create more masculine or feminine features. Your child should desire plastic surgery for themselves and have already had a psychological examination and been diagnosed with gender dysphoria by a qualified medical professional. Although plastic surgery is an excellent option for restoring a person’s confidence and self-image, it is important that your teenager is aware that surgery entails recovery time and results are not immediate. They should be willing to follow post-surgical instructions and care for themselves following surgery with the assistance of a parent or caregiver.

Are They Physically Healthy?

Plastic surgery is surgery, and surgery entails anesthesia, incisions, and recovery. Adolescents undergoing surgery should not have any current medical conditions that could inhibit their success in recovering from surgery safely and effectively. During your consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Alexander, you, your child, and the surgeon will review your teenager’s medical history and health to help you determine if they are physically healthy for surgery. You will also discuss their concerns and become educated about transgender surgery and what procedure(s) would best fit their body and goals.

Are Smaller Breasts a New Trend?

Girl wearing in bra measures her breast measuring tapeBreasts are important to many women. They are a symbol of femininity, and having symmetrical, round breasts is ideal to most women. Large, perky breasts have traditionally been popular. However, it seems the trend is leaning more toward smaller breasts and nipples. Some women no longer want voluminous breasts that stand out but would rather have natural-looking breasts that fit their bodies. Why are women opting for smaller breasts and nipples, and how can they achieve this goal?

Changes in Lifestyle

Many women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery may want to reduce the size of their breast implants due to lifestyle changes. Some might find that having large breasts inhibits their ability to stay active, such as when participating in sports or high-impact exercises. Others might have gone through weight fluctuations or pregnancy that has changed the overall appearance of their breasts and body. Some women do not like how clothing fits over larger breasts and feel that smaller breast will provide them with more fashion options. Patients can reduce the size of their breasts by having their implants removed or replaced with smaller implants during breast revision surgery. Breast revision is performed by removing the breast implants through the original incision, if possible (either along the breast crease, around the areola, or through the armpits), and new saline or silicone breast implants are placed through the same incision.

Breast Implant Complications

Some women do not desire smaller breasts but need breast revision surgery for another reason. Although breast augmentation is a safe and effective procedure, there are always risks and complications associated with any surgery. When complications such as implant rupture or capsular contracture arise, implant removal or replacement might be necessary. Some women decide to have smaller breast implants placed during a secondary procedure to fit their body or lifestyle better.

Pain Associated With Pendulous Breasts

Large breasts can be flattering on some women but painful for others. Breasts that are overly large can be too heavy on the body, causing neck, shoulder, and back pain. Breast reduction surgery can be performed to remove excess glandular tissue to create smaller, more shapely breasts while alleviating the pain associated with pendulous breasts. An anchor-shaped incision is made around the areola that extends down to the breast crease, where a horizontal incision is made across the fold. Excess breast tissue and skin are removed, and the incision is sutured closed. Women can feel more comfortable in their body and clothing with breasts that better fit their figure.

You Can Be the Person You Truly Are!

Man With Shadow of a WomanSome people were born one gender but feel like another individual on the inside. This condition is known as identity dysphoria. Someone who is suffering from identity dysphoria is affected both emotionally and physically. Often, these people can only achieve physical relief by changing their outer appearance. Gender reassignment surgery allows those with identity dysphoria to become the person they truly are. By undergoing one or a combination of plastic surgery procedures, patients can transform their bodies to reflect the person they are on the inside.

Female to Male (FTM) Sex Reassignment Surgery

When addressing female to male (FTM) sex reassignment surgery, the goal is to create more masculine features. This conversion can be achieved by removing inherently female traits such as breasts and feminine curves. Some of the more popular female to male transgender sex reassignment procedures include:

  • Top surgery: The breast tissue, skin, and fat may be removed through a periareolar incision (around the outer edge of the areola) or a double incision (horizontal or U-shaped) with free nipple grafts. Any remaining skin is pulled to the center towards the areola. If necessary, the areola can be reduced.
  • Pectoral implants: Pectoral implants are used to create more masculine chest contours. A small incision is made in the armpits to allow for the implants to be placed into the chest.
  • Liposuction: Feminine curves are reduced in the thighs, hips, and abdomen via liposuction to provide a more masculine shape. Small incisions are made in the target area(s), and a small, hollow tube, known as a cannula, is used to remove unwanted fat.

Male to Female (MTF) Sex Reassignment Surgery

Male to female (MTF) sex reassignment surgery is accomplished by creating more feminine traits. Alterations are made to the body and face to produce feminine features. Some of the more popular male to female sex reassignment procedures include:

  • Breast augmentation: Breasts are augmented using implants that consist of a silicone shell filled with either saline solution or cohesive silicone gel. Typically, an incision is made around the areola. The breast implants are placed above or below the pectoral muscle to create a more feminine chest.
  • Brazilian Butt Lift: A fuller, more voluminous buttocks is created by removing excess fat from one area of the body and injecting it into the buttocks. Fat is harvested from the donor site, cleansed and purified, and then strategically injected into the buttocks to form feminine curves along the buttocks and hips.
  • Feminizing rhinoplasty: To create a feminine profile, patients may desire a refined nasal tip, narrower nasal bone, or smaller nostrils. With feminizing rhinoplasty, the entire nasal profile is improved, resulting in a more feminine facial structure. In addition to rhinoplasty, other facial procedures, such as chin implant surgery or Adam’s apple reduction, may be performed to feminize the facial appearance completely.

If you are interested in gender reassignment surgery, Dr. Tim Alexander can provide you with a personalized treatment plan. Schedule your consultation today by calling (954) 589-0722 or by filling out our online contact form.
