Otoplasty in Miami, FL

Otoplasty is a type of surgery that corrects the deformities of the ear. Also known as ear surgery, this procedure can improve the shape and position of the ears to provide a more aesthetically pleasing appearance with the rest of the face. At his South Florida practice, Dr. Timothy Alexander regularly performs otoplasty for individuals of all ages.
Best Candidates

Ideal candidates for otoplasty surgery are in good physical and emotional health. Even though otoplasty is an effective procedure, patients should have a positive outlook about their results and choose to undergo ear surgery to correct one or more of the following conditions:

  • Overly large ears (macrotia)
  • Protruding ears
  • Large, stretched, or torn earlobes
  • Dissatisfaction with a prior ear surgery

Technique

Otoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under intravenous or general anesthesia. After an incision is made in the natural crease behind the ear where the head and ear meet excess skin is excised. Once the cartilage is sculpted to reveal a more natural looking appearance, the incisions are closed with sutures.

During your consultation, Dr. Alexander will take your personal preferences into account and determine which technique is best for you.

Recovery

After the procedure is complete, the ears will be wrapped with bandages and a special headdress will be worn to minimize swelling. Medication will be prescribed to relieve any pain or discomfort that may exist during the first few days. During this time, patients should avoid sleeping on their side. Although most patients feel well enough to return to work about a week after surgery, they should avoid any strenuous exercises or activities during the first few weeks or until the incisions completely heal.
