How to Properly Recover After Your Gynecomastia Surgery

Many male patients who struggle with enlarged, feminine breasts (a condition known as gynecomastia) often look into gynecomastia surgery to alleviate their embarrassment and rid themselves of excess fat and glandular tissue. With men now commonly undergoing plastic surgery to improve their self-esteem, making sure they are taking proper care of their health during their recovery is just as important as the surgery itself. Although taking time off is not ideal for any man with a busy schedule, tackling too much after surgery is not a good idea either. Here are a few ways to help make your recovery easier and more comfortable after undergoing extensive surgery.

Incision Care

The more you rest, the faster your recovery will be. It is important that you take this time to allow your body to heal after an extensive procedure. Be sure to refrain from all strenuous activities that require large shoulder and chest movements until your incisions are fully healed. Any physical activity that puts stress or tension on the treated area can lead to serious injuries or complications. If you feel restless and need to move around, we recommend you do the following:

  • Engage in easy housework
  • Take light walks to prevent blood clots from developing
  • Start a new hobby like adult coloring or solving puzzles

When to Shower and Shave

It is crucial that you do not shower or bathe following your gynecomastia surgery, as submerging your incisions will soak your bandages and increase the risk of infection. If you insist on showering, use a sponge to gently clean the treated area. Pat the incisions dry once you are finished. After a few days have passed and your surgeon has removed your bandages, you will be able to shower with lukewarm water. You will not be able to bathe for at least two weeks, or until your incisions are fully healed.

If you are someone who shaves their chest regularly, make sure to wait until you have cleared it with your surgeon. Shaving right after gynecomastia surgery is not the best decision, as the area needs time to heal after having endured an intense procedure.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

It is beneficial to take care of your physical health as well as your incisions after undergoing gynecomastia surgery. Be sure to drink plenty of water or fruit juices to prevent dehydration. If it is too painful to swallow solid foods during the first few days of your recovery, we recommend eating the following:

  • Soup
  • Jell-O®
  • Smoothies
  • Pudding
  • Milkshakes

Once you feel you can make the switch to eating solid foods, it is recommended that you consume a healthy meal that contains plenty of fruits, veggies, and protein. Drinking alcohol and smoking must be avoided for the next few weeks, as these can delay your healing process.

Maintaining a healthy and hygienic lifestyle will make your recovery go more smoothly, and your results will look great giving you the boost of confidence you’ve needed.

How Blepharoplasty Can Make Your Face Appear Younger

Our eyes are one of the most noticeable and attractive facial features we have. The way our eyes look can reveal a lot about how much sleep we’re getting, how we’re feeling, and how old we are. As we age, the skin around our eyes can become loose and droopy, making them appear worn out, dull, and inexpressive. However, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift surgery) can restore beauty, youthfulness, and a more vibrant expression to your eyes by addressing issues such as sagging skin and dark circles.

img-blog-Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

What Causes a Tired Expression and Aged Appearance?

The more we age, the more our eyes begin to lose that youthful and vibrant spark they once had. Blepharoplasty can remove excess skin and fat that contribute to your tired and aged look by addressing the following concerns.

No More Sagging Eyelids

Throughout our lives, we make countless eye movements and blinks, all of which cause stress on our eyelids. That is because the skin surrounding both the upper and lower eyelids is one of the thinnest on the body. Sagging in the upper and lower eyelids can be corrected by removing loose skin and displaced fat deposits from your eyes. This will give your eyes a more alert and youthful appearance.

Say Goodbye to Dark Circles

As we age, the muscles below the eyes can weaken, just like they do in others areas of our face, causing the lower eyelids to sag. On top of that, the skin that surrounds the muscle begins to lose elasticity due to reduced collagen production. Displaced fat can also cause the lower eyelids to look puffy. These three factors create the appearance of heavy bags and dark circles under the eyes. Lower blepharoplasty can minimize the appearance of bags and dark circles by removing excess fatty tissue and tightening the skin to restore a more youthful and natural appearance.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Incisions for blepharoplasty are made along the natural fold of the upper eyelids for an upper eyelid lift, and they are either hidden inside the lower eyelids or just below the lower lashes for a lower eyelid lift. Excess fat deposits are removed or redistributed, muscles may be tightened, and loose skin is removed, leaving you with a smooth and youthful look.

Along with proper care, such as sun protection and a healthy diet, your results can last for many years.

Getting Your Best Summer Body Through Plastic Surgery

With summer in full swing, many patients may feel that they are still not ready to break out their swimsuits. Whether you are struggling with excess fat or sagging skin, it comes as no surprise that many men and women look into plastic surgery so they can look and feel confident. If you are interested in attaining your best summer body, Dr. Alexander offers many body contouring procedures, including liposuction, Smartlipo™, and tummy tuck surgery, to help his patients achieve their aesthetic goals and enjoy some fun in the sun.

When Should You Consider Surgery?

If you are interested in a body contouring procedure, the best time to undergo plastic surgery is in the winter or spring. Because each patient may heal differently, undergoing surgery before the summer will give you enough time to heal and recover. Extensive procedures such as liposuction, Smartlipo™, or tummy tuck surgery may require lengthy recovery periods that can take anywhere from three weeks to six months. Bruising and swelling can also occur after your surgery, and it can even prolong your recovery time. While you may be able to resume normal activities weeks after your surgery, it may take a few months for your final results to become visible.

Liposuction

Sometimes diet and exercise may not be able to eliminate localized pockets of fat that remain on the body, no matter how hard you try. Liposuction can provide patients with a toned and fit figure that will allow them to feel comfortable in their swimwear. This procedure can eliminate unwanted fat deposits on the arms, thighs, back, abdomen, and buttocks to help achieve a more slender appearance.

Smartlipo™

Smartlipo™ is a safe, laser-assisted procedure that can eliminate fat by heating and liquefying fat cells. Patients with an excess amount of lingering fat can benefit from this treatment. Smartlipo™ can also increase collagen production for a tighter and more toned appearance.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, can correct muscle laxity and remove sagging skin that has developed from weight loss, pregnancy, or aging. It can also be combined with liposuction to remove fat deposits for a slimmer and toned figure that will make you feel beautiful and confident about your appearance during the summer.

Benefits of Facelift Surgery

Aging can often take its toll on many men and women, and it is especially apparent on their faces. Whether you are struggling with wrinkles, sagging skin, or fine lines, it is clear that everyone wants to look their best. Many patients commonly turn to facial plastic surgery to enhance their appearance. One of the most popular procedure options is facelift surgery. While some patients may require extensive facial rejuvenation, others can benefit from minor enhancements through mid-facelift surgery. Dr. Alexander offers both procedures to help patients look and feel more youthful.

Facelift Procedure

Facelift surgery can effectively tighten sagging skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles to restore a more youthful aesthetic. This procedure is performed by removing and repositioning the skin and muscle tissue along the mid-face, lower face, neck, and jawline. An incision will be made around the hairline at the temples and continue around the ear to the lower scalp. The facial muscles will then be lifted and tightened, and excess skin will be trimmed. The remaining skin will be redraped over the uplifted contours.

Patients can choose between a full and mini facelift, or their procedure can be combined with a neck lift. It is also important that patients are in good health and have realistic expectations before undergoing facelift surgery.

Mid-Facelift Procedure

Not all patients who experience noticeable signs of aging require a traditional facelift procedure.  Mid-facelift surgery, also known as a cheek lift, is performed to address sagging of the cheeks and other areas of the mid-face. This type of lift is ideal for patients who have heaviness below the cheeks and hollowness under the eyes. During your surgery, small incisions will be made in the hairline above the patient’s ear. Then, excess fat and skin are removed to give fullness to the eyes to create a more youthful appearance. Mid-facelift surgery also results in less scarring than a traditional facelift.

If you would like to know if you are an ideal candidate for traditional facelift or mid-facelift surgery, please contact our office at (954) 589-0722 or schedule a consultation with us online.

Preparing for Your Transgender Procedure

Many patients who seek plastic surgery do so to feel comfortable in their own skin. However, some people undergo plastic surgery to help that skin reflect the way they feel inside.

Dr. Alexander offers several gender reassignment procedures for trans men and trans women to help them feel like their true self, including male to female (MTF) and female to male (FTM) surgeries. However, before any surgery can take place, Dr. Alexander requires all of his patients to meet specific prerequisites that will prepare them for their gender reassignment procedure.

Gender Dysphoria

Gender dysphoria is a medical condition in which a person describes being born in the wrong body. Individuals experiencing gender dysphoria often feel dissatisfied with their biological sex because it does not match their true gender identity. Many transgender patients look into plastic surgery to enhance their physical appearance so that it matches the gender they identify with most.

Trans men who wish to attain more masculine features and trans women who would like more feminine features must have an actual diagnosis of gender dysphoria before they can proceed with their gender reassignment procedure. To receive a medical diagnosis, patients can make an appointment with a mental health professional to discuss their gender identity.

Therapy

As many transgender patients experience gender dysphoria, transitioning and receiving support and acceptance from loved ones can help improve their mental health. Trans men and trans women often find themselves feeling happier once they start openly living as their true gender.

Once a patient has been truly diagnosed with gender dysphoria, they must complete one year of hormone therapy, as well as having lived in their desired gender for at least one year. Transgender patients must also have medical clearance from their primary care physician prior to surgery and must be at least 18 years of age or older. To be considered for gender reassignment surgery, patients must also be emotionally stable and medically healthy.

To learn more about Dr. Alexander’s gender reassignment surgery and prerequisites, please do not hesitate to call our office today at (954) 589-0722 or (305) 756-8743. We are here to assist your personal needs and help you be your true self.

Facelift Myths: Debunked!

Doctor surgeon hand in glove draw wrinkle lines on Woman faceA facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure that helps patients who wish to revitalize and rejuvenate their facial appearance. Facial surgery can remove excess skin and fatty tissue to tighten the muscles around the face for a youthful and more attractive look.

While many patients seek a facelift to attend to their desired needs, others may decide against this procedure due to the countless misconceptions surrounding the surgery. It is important to familiarize yourself with any procedure before deciding to endure it; however, you may come across a few myths regarding facelifts that are simply not true.

Facelifts Are Just for Women

First things first, facelifts are not limited to female patients. While it is traditionally more common for women to undergo cosmetic surgery, men also seek options to benefit their physical needs, which leads them to plastic surgery. Facelifts are among one of the most popular procedures in America for both male and female patients who suffer from sagging jowls or hollowed cheeks.

There Is an Age Requirement

Everyone’s face ages differently depending on genetics and environmental factors. Older patients who wish to undergo facial surgery may feel they are too old for the procedure, and younger patients may think the opposite. While there is no ideal age for when you should undergo a facelift, it is always best to consult with your doctor to determine what he recommends is best for you.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Is the Same Thing

While BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectable treatments offer facial rejuvenation without the need for surgery, they do not provide the same results as a facelift procedure. BOTOX® Cosmetic is used for treating wrinkles, facial lines, and crow’s feet. However, these injectables do not address loose or sagging skin or signs of facial aging in the middle and lower regions of the face like facelift surgery can.

Facelifts Are Permanent

Aging is a part of life. Although facelift surgery may efficiently take years off of your appearance and have long-lasting results, it cannot stop you from aging altogether. To help maintain a healthy and natural-looking appearance, even after your procedure, it is recommended that you moisturize regularly, apply sunscreen daily, and avoid things that can cause damage to your face.

Feel Like Yourself Again With a Mommy Makeover

Womans abdomen divergence of the muscles of the abdomen after pregnancyHaving a child is one of life’s greatest blessings. The transformation that a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy and childbirth to welcome a child into the world is nothing short of a miracle. However, after giving birth, many women recognize the toll that creating a child has taken on their body. A growing abdomen to accommodate a baby and enlarged breasts to produce milk often leave these areas of the body with stretch marks and sagging skin. Additionally, other areas of the body may be left with fatty deposits that were not there before childbirth. When the body has healed after giving birth, many women seek different avenues to get their body back to the way it was. And when diet and exercise just aren’t enough, women often seek additional help from cosmetic surgery.

Giving the Ladies a New Look

Female hormones during pregnancy cause the breasts to enlarge, and after birth, the breasts become engorged with milk to feed a baby. After pregnancy is over and breastfeeding has stopped, the breasts can appear to sag, have loose skin, and be asymmetrical. While strengthening the pectoral muscles with various exercises can assist in lifting the breasts naturally, exercise alone will not correct the shape or enhance the overall size of the breasts.

A breast augmentation performed by a plastic surgeon can correct asymmetry, increase or decrease the size, and lift the breasts back into a preferable position on the chest. To increase the size of the breasts, implants or fat transfer via liposuction of the abdomen or thighs is commonly used. While there are different techniques for performing a breast augmentation procedure, a consultation with a surgeon will determine what is best for each individual’s needs. Most often, surgeons will perform both an augmentation and a lift to obtain desired results. Most patients can return to work in about one week but should abstain from strenuous activities for approximately six weeks.

Flattening the Abdominals

During pregnancy, a woman’s abdominal muscles separate, and the skin stretches in order to accommodate a growing baby. As the body recovers from childbirth, the muscles do not always come back together properly, and the skin may become lax. This gap in the abdominal muscles is called diastasis recti and usually requires surgery to repair. If not repaired, the abdominal area will appear to protrude, or the woman will continue to look pregnant. A tummy tuck procedure will tighten the muscles and remove excess sagging skin. Recovery downtime for a tummy tuck is two weeks, with activities as tolerated from two to six weeks and no strenuous activities for up to six months.

Getting Rid of Excess Fat

Liposuction can be a great way to eliminate excess stubborn fat. This procedure can be performed in conjunction with other procedures and on a variety of areas on the body. Areas commonly treated with liposuction are the abdomen, thighs, back, and arms. Under normal circumstances, liposuction is relatively quick, with patients returning to normal activities in two weeks.

The Benefits of Combining Procedures

  • Anesthesia only administered one time
  • One surgery appointment
  • One recovery period
  • Save money
  • Total body transformation

The Practical Side of Rhinoplasty

nose with surgery line with nose surgeryRhinoplasty, commonly known as nose surgery, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures for both women and men. The procedure is performed to change the size and shape of the nose. For some people, rhinoplasty isn’t performed for aesthetic reasons. Rhinoplasty might be medically necessary for repairing the nose so it can look and function properly.

Damage From Injury

Despite how hard we try to stay free from injury, accidents happen. You trip and fall on your face, get hit with a baseball or an airbag, or maybe even get into a fist fight that doesn’t end in your favor. Things happen, and luckily rhinoplasty can fix and even improve the function and appearance of the nose.

Difficulty Breathing

Difficulty breathing is usually a symptom of a deviated septum. The nasal septum, which is the thin wall between the nasal passages, becomes displaced that causes a partial or complete blockage of airflow from one nostril. This issue can be present at birth or caused by an injury. Septoplasty is a procedure designed to straighten the septum and allow for better airflow. Since a person is already under anesthesia for this procedure, many people will take advantage and have cosmetic work performed on their nose at the same time.

Sinus Problems

A deviated septum can also cause severe sinus issues. A common symptom of a deviated septum is nasal congestion, and one side of the nose is always more congested than the other. This leads to recurrent and repeated sinus infections, which then causes headaches, facial pain, and post-nasal drip. Medication can offer some relief, but it is not a permanent solution. Surgery to repair the septum is the only solution to permanently relieve these symptoms.

Birth Defects

Congenital nasal deformities can cause symptomatic nasal airway obstruction and a decreased self-esteem in children and adults. A deformed nasal structure is related to some of the medical issues discussed above and often brings unwanted attention to the nose instead of the face as a whole.

Being that it is one of the most prominent facial features, the nose is supposed to complement the face, not take away from the other characteristics. Rhinoplasty is a relatively easy procedure that can significantly enhance a person’s quality of life.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

male nudeWhile women desire full and noticeable breasts, the same cannot be said for men. Although it isn’t widely discussed, enlarged male breasts are more common than you might suspect, affecting men of all ages. For men, having enlarged breasts can bring both emotional and physical anguish. Many men find that having gynecomastia (the condition of enlarged male breasts) dampens their confidence in social or intimate situations, even causing them to refrain from participating in the activities they enjoy. Additionally, many men find that excess fat, tissue, and skin in their chest makes exercise physically painful. Even though much of the chest’s volume is made up of fatty tissue, exercise and diet typically do not have any effect on gynecomastia. The one sure way to get rid of this condition, however, is through gynecomastia surgery.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be present in men for several reasons. One common reason is a hormonal imbalance in which estrogen levels are increased in comparison to androgen (male hormone) levels. For this reason, gynecomastia often develops during puberty and may or may not resolve itself over time. Other causes of gynecomastia include weight gain, a loss of skin elasticity, and the use of anabolic steroids or other medications that create an imbalance in estrogen levels.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

During gynecomastia surgery, surgical techniques are tailored to each patient depending on the amount of excess fat, tissue, and skin needed to be removed. If the primary concern with your gynecomastia is excess fatty tissue, then liposuction alone may be enough to rid you of the condition. In this procedure, a cannula (a thin tube), is inserted under the breasts, and the fatty tissue is removed. While the majority of gynecomastia surgeries involve liposuction, there are some cases where liposuction alone is not enough and incisions to excise excess skin and glandular tissue are required. If this is the case, an incision will be made around the areola to remove the excess skin and tissue to flatten the chest.

What Is the Recovery Like?

While all surgeries come with a recovery period, gynecomastia surgery is relatively minor. After your procedure, you will be wrapped in a compression garment to reduce swelling and promote the healing process. You will be given instructions on how long you need to wear this bandage. Patients can typically return to work after one week, depending on the nature of your specific procedure, and you can resume your daily activities soon after. Gynecomastia surgery offers long-lasting results that flattens, contours, and creates a more masculine physique.

Recovering From Labiaplasty

Rear view of a woman relaxing sitting on a couch with the hands on the head and looking outdoorsWith any cosmetic procedure, it is important to follow all of your doctor’s recommendations to ensure a speedy and comfortable recovery. Labiaplasty is no different. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that decreases the size while improving the function of a woman’s labia, which may have stretched due to age, heredity, and childbirth. While the recovery period of any procedure is never ideal, keeping the following in mind will allow for the best recovery possible.

Prepare a Comfortable Recovery Space

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure; however, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first night of your recovery. In order to ensure a smooth transition, it is helpful to have a comfortable space prepared with a lot of pillows and easy access to everything you may need.

Refrain From Sexual Activity

Due to the invasiveness of the procedure, it is necessary that you abstain from intercourse for one to two months to allow your body to fully heal. You should also refrain from wearing tampons during this time.

Limit Physical Activity

While you can often return to work after one week (physically demanding jobs may require longer), it is important that you refrain from heavy physical activity for at least three weeks. It is, however, recommended that you stand and take easy, non-strenuous walks around your house or neighborhood as this increases blood flow and promotes healing.

Stop Smoking

This is important to remember both before and after your surgery. Smoking increases the possibility of complications during your surgery and hinders your recovery afterward as it decreases blood flow and weakens the immune system.

Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing

After your procedure, you will be required to wear a compression undergarment to control swelling and increase blood flow. Afterward, form-fitting clothing, such as yoga pants or skinny jeans, should be avoided to increase comfort and healing.

Remember to Relax

You decided to undergo labiaplasty for yourself. So take this recovery time for yourself as well. Relaxing in a stress-free environment is one of the best recommendations for a speedy recovery. Listen to your body, don’t push yourself before you’re ready, and remember that it is okay to relax and heal.

During your consultation, Dr. Alexander will provide you with a detailed explanation of what you can expect during your recovery.
