Labiaplasty Procedure
We offer many procedures at our South Florida practice, including labiaplasty. Also known as labia rejuvenation, this procedure is intended to decrease the size and improve the appearance of enlarged, hypertrophic, or asymmetrical labia (the “lips” of the vaginal opening). Our cosmetic specialist, Dr Timothy Alexander has over thirty years of experience and utilizes his knowledge and experience to carry out each labia rejuvenation procedure.
A labiaplasty is a procedure that improves both the look and the function of the labia. There are two parts of the labia: the labia minora and the labia majora. The labia minora are the inner set of “lips” that cover the clitoris and vagina. The labia majora are the outer set of “lips” on the outside of the body, usually covered with pubic hair.
Age, hormones, childbirth, and sexual intercourse can cause the labia to become stretched and loose. Sometimes this can cause hygiene problems or make sexual intercourse or other physical activities painful. In addition, enlarged labia can cause many women to feel self-conscious. Labiaplasty can help these women by removing excess skin and reshaping the labia into a more cosmetically appealing shape.
Ideal Candidate for Labiaplasty
The ideal candidate for a labiaplasty is:
- Someone whose normal activities are impaired due to enlarged labia
- Someone who has pain or sexual dysfunction due to enlarged labia
- Someone who is not planning on getting pregnant in the future
- Someone who is self-conscious about the look of her labia
Surgery
During the labiaplasty, excess skin and tissue is removed from the labia minora and the labia majora can be reduced through surgery or liposuction. Throughout the procedure, Dr. Alexander strives to maintain each patient’s natural contour and sensation of their labia while leaving behind as little scarring as possible. The procedure takes about 1 hour to complete and the results are considered to be fairly permanent.
Although there are no age requirements to undergo a labiaplasty, it is recommended that you wait until you are finished having children, as pregnancy and delivery can stretch the labia.
Recovery
Postoperatively, you can expect to be swollen and experience some pain, but this can be controlled with prescription medication. You may be given supportive undergarments to wear. During recovery, you must refrain from all sexual activity for one to two months to facilitate healing. In addition, you will have to avoid using any feminine hygiene products, vibrators. Although you will be able to return to work within two to five days, you should limit your physical activity and avoid strenuous physical activities for about three weeks.
Risks
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks for complications. Complications associated with labiaplasty include:
- Infection
- Scarring
- Asymmetry of the labia
- Changes in skin color
- Decreased or increased sensation of the labia
Therefore, to reduce your risk for complications following your labiaplasty, it is important that you follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions.
