Gynecomastia in Miami, FL

Enlargement of the breasts is a common occurrence in males of all ages. To correct the appearance of overdeveloped breasts, gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) is typically performed. Usually Liposuction will be enough to remove excess localized fat deposits, but persistent excess glandular tissue, fat and skin needs to be surgically removed from around the areola, and from the bottom of the breasts to create a smaller chest contour. With this technique, Dr. Alexander is able to create a flatter chest. Once Dr. Alexander removes the excess fatty tissue, glandular tissue and skin, the Gynecomastia condition is gone and there is no recurrence in the future.

Various factors can result in enlargement of the male breasts, including:

  • Hormonal factors
  • Weight Gain
  • Loss of skin elasticity

Gynecomastia Surgery Candidates

Candidates for gynecomastia surgery are in good physical and emotional health. Ideally, the procedure should not be carried out until the breasts are fully developed, which usually occurs around 17 years of age. Although gynecomastia surgery is a very effective procedure, patients should have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure.

Technique

Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. There are several different methods that can be performed depending on the severity of each patient’s condition.

Liposuction

When only excessive fatty tissue exists, liposuction can be performed alone to contour the breasts. A cannula (thin hollow tube) is inserted through an incisions under the breasts and fat deposits are suctioned out.

Periareolar Incision

An incision is made around the areola (dark part of the skin) where excess skin and glandular tissue are excised.

After the desired amount of tissue and fat deposits are removed, the chest is recontoured to a more attractive physique. The incisions are then closed using sutures.

Double Incision (large breasts)

Incisions are made around the areolas to remove excess skin and glandular tissue. After the desired amount of each is removed, the areolas are moved to a higher, more attractive position.

Once the desired amount of tissue and fat deposits are removed, the chest is recontoured to a more attractive physique and the incisions are then closed using sutures.

During your consultation, Dr. Alexander will take your personal preferences into account and determine if gynecomastia surgery will be beneficial for you.

Recovery

After the procedure is finished, bandages will be placed over the incisions and a compression garment will be placed around the chest area to reduce swelling. Medication will be prescribed to relieve any pain or discomfort during the first few days. All strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided until the incisions heal and the underlying muscles fully recover.
