Preparing for Your Transgender Procedure

Many patients who seek plastic surgery do so to feel comfortable in their own skin. However, some people undergo plastic surgery to help that skin reflect the way they feel inside.

Dr. Alexander offers several gender reassignment procedures for trans men and trans women to help them feel like their true self, including male to female (MTF) and female to male (FTM) surgeries. However, before any surgery can take place, Dr. Alexander requires all of his patients to meet specific prerequisites that will prepare them for their gender reassignment procedure.

Gender Dysphoria

Gender dysphoria is a medical condition in which a person describes being born in the wrong body. Individuals experiencing gender dysphoria often feel dissatisfied with their biological sex because it does not match their true gender identity. Many transgender patients look into plastic surgery to enhance their physical appearance so that it matches the gender they identify with most.

Trans men who wish to attain more masculine features and trans women who would like more feminine features must have an actual diagnosis of gender dysphoria before they can proceed with their gender reassignment procedure. To receive a medical diagnosis, patients can make an appointment with a mental health professional to discuss their gender identity.

As many transgender patients experience gender dysphoria, transitioning and receiving support and acceptance from loved ones can help improve their mental health. Trans men and trans women often find themselves feeling happier once they start openly living as their true gender.

Once a patient has been truly diagnosed with gender dysphoria, they must complete one year of hormone therapy, as well as having lived in their desired gender for at least one year. Transgender patients must also have medical clearance from their primary care physician prior to surgery and must be at least 18 years of age or older. To be considered for gender reassignment surgery, patients must also be emotionally stable and medically healthy.
