Although not often talked about, men can be insecure about their bodies too. Even though many females undergo cosmetic procedures, plastic surgery isn’t only for women. More men are undergoing body contouring procedures every year. In fact, male plastic surgery has tripled in the last 20 years, with liposuction as the top procedure. Men are becoming more concerned about their appearance and want to look good underneath clothing and with their bodies unveiled. Dr. Timothy Alexander performs many different procedures on his male patients to improve their physique and help them restore their self-image.

Diminish the Appearance of “Man Boobs”

Many men suffer from a condition known as gynecomastia, which is an overdevelopment of glandular tissue that causes the appearance of female-like breasts. Although some men who have enlarged breasts have tried diet and exercise to alleviate enlarged breasts, they may not be able to reach their goals without surgery. Male breast reduction surgery, or gynecomastia surgery, is often their only solution for removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and/or skin from their chest. Gynecomastia surgery may involve one or a combination of the following methods:

  • Liposuction: Ideal for men with excess fat but no sagging breast skin. Liposuction requires the use of a cannula that is hooked up to a vacuum device to suction out the fat.
  • Periareolar incision: An incision is made around each areola. Through the incisions, excess skin and glandular tissue are excised.
  • Double incision: A solution for men who have excessive amounts of skin, fat, and tissue. Incisions are made around the areolas to contour the area, and the areolas are relocated to a higher, more youthful position.

Achieve Fuller, Firmer Pectoral Muscles

Even with diet and exercise, many men often find that they are unable to attain more masculine chest contours. Pectoral implants made of silicone can be used to add more definition to the chest. An incision is made in each armpit along the edge of the pectoral muscles, and tunnels are made to insert the implants. Incisions are sutured closed, and a support garment is used to secure the implants in place as they heal. Once swelling and bruising have subsided, patients will notice their firmer, more defined pectoral muscles.

Remove Fat and Contour the Body

Excess pockets of fat in stubborn areas of the body are sometimes unresponsive to a healthy lifestyle, such as a regular diet and exercise regimen. In addition to being utilized during gynecomastia surgery, liposuction can also be performed on other areas of the body. During liposuction, Dr. Alexander can remove fat from multiple areas while moving the cannula in a back and forth motion to improve contours.
